The classic card game, widely recognized across the Netherlands, is now accessible on the iPad through this dedicated application, which is currently the only Toepen app available with multiplayer functionality included.

Multiplayer Functionality

The latest version 3.0 of this app enables users to engage in gameplay against friends or other online players regardless of location—whether connected via Wi-Fi or 3G. If friends do not have the app, spontaneous online matches against random opponents are possible. Additionally, groups of four players can compete by initiating a multiplayer game and inviting others to join, facilitating a four-player match regardless of physical proximity. The app also supports two- and three-player matches by automatically substituting virtual opponents as needed.

Intelligent AI Opponents

The single-player mode features three virtual opponents equipped with advanced strategic capabilities, including forward planning and probability calculations. These AI players adapt their behavior based on your tactics; for instance, if you frequently bluff, they will interpret your actions accordingly and respond more cautiously.

Customizable Rules Settings

Recognizing that Toepen rules vary widely across different circles—and that no official standards exist—this app offers adjustable settings. Users can modify options such as penalties for certain card combinations (e.g., 'dirty laundry'), the points threshold for ending the game, and game speed, allowing for personalized gameplay experiences.

Note: Multiplayer functionality relies on GameCenter, which requires iOS 4.1 or later. Compatibility varies across devices; for example, GameCenter is not supported on the iPhone 3G.

Understanding GameCenter

1. Playing against friends:

• 1. Launch the GameCenter app and sign in with your Apple ID.
• 2. Add your friends to your GameCenter contacts who you wish to play with.
• 3. Open the Toepen app and select multiplayer mode.
• 4. One player sends an invitation to others via the 'invite' button at the bottom; up to four players can be invited. Players can be added or removed as desired.
• 5. Invited players receive a notification—on iOS5 via a banner at the top; on iOS4 as a pop-up alert—and can accept to establish connections. The host player then presses 'Play Now' to start the game.

• 1. Open the Toepen app and select multiplayer mode.
• 2. Adjust player participation at the bottom of the screen as desired.
• 3. Tap 'Play Now' to search for available opponents; GameCenter crowds searches with other users also seeking matches to facilitate quick pairing, with larger search pools increasing match availability.
